COVID-19 has impacted all our lives, emotionally, politically, financially, medically, spiritually, and socially. Directly or indirectly, we or someone we know is self-isolating at home to flatten the curve or is quarantined in a room because someone is sick or has tested positive for Covid-19 and/or know someone refusing to do so. Regardless of your opinion, you have probably felt at least a momentary surge of panic or anger at the idea of being physically cut off from your family or friends for days or weeks, or months. Maybe someone you know or love is in the hospital or has passed away.

Social distancing can feel brutal. Human beings have evolved over thousands of years to take comfort in one another’s presence. When we are isolated, we feel it on a physiological level. If we are candid, we can probably recognize that some of our fear about being alone is not unique to the current pandemic. FOMO (fear of missing out) is a real thing. It is a fear that has lurked in us for years. Who are we if not for the roles we play?

We have forgotten, or perhaps never learned, how to sit in stillness with ourselves, including with our uncomfortable thoughts and emotions. Enjoying life and feeling “successful” starts with having a good relationship with yourself. Spending time with yourself, noticing your best traits, thoughts, and beliefs, and then diving into the areas of discomfort is an opportunity to see the light within you and around you.

When we see the end of COVID, we will find that if we have taken the time to reflect on who you are, without all of the roles assigned, you will be ready to create what you want in your life and how you want to feel each day about yourself and all others.

Use this opportunity not to escape solitude but to lean into it. Take this time to dig deep and discover who you are, not the person you project on social media and elsewhere.

Breathe. BE still and ask:

What am I thankful for today?

Who am I connecting with today and why?

What expectations of“normal” am I letting go of today?

How am I getting outside today?

How am I moving my body today?

What beauty am I either creating, cultivating, or inviting today?

It is always about you.
